We also took some time in class this week (Oct. 1) to define "deliverer". What does it mean to say God is a deliverer? It means that He takes his people out of a situation they cannot get out of on their own (i.e., being trapped by the Red Sea and pursued by the Egyptians) -- and puts them in a totally different situation (a position of safety on the other side of the sea.) A pizza delivery man is a "deliverer" in one limited sense. He takes the pizza from one place (the pizza place)and takes it to another (your house.) The pizza cannot take itself to your house. The pizza needs a "deliverer." God's people need a deliverer. They cannot save themselves from the Egyptians. A better illustration of a deliverer is the knight on the white horse who comes in and saves the maiden who is being held prisoner. He pulls her up onto his horse and rides off with her, delivering her from her plight. In this same way, God decisively steps in to rescue His people from an otherwise hopeless situation. He does what is impossible for His people to do on their own.
Seeing the God of Moses as the "deliverer" establishes a biblical category so our children will better able to understand the role of the One to whom the Bible is pointing: Jesus, the ultimate deliverer of His people, who does for them what they can never do for themselves, rescues them from slavery to sin and gives them safety and joy with Him forever. "Deliverer" is a very good word for 5-year-olds to know and use!
